Campaign Plan 01 - Summary
Welcome to the first article on crafting a campaign plan. It all starts with a campaign summary to set the stage for entering the political arena.
Once you have decided to run for office, it is time to bring your immediate team together to discuss the overarching message and strategy for the campaign. Start with a simple discussion on the district, past elections, the culture of the district, the biggest issues, and hash together a verbal summary discussing your goals, message, strategies, methods, and some insight into the opposition.
Take some notes during the conversation and then put in text what you agreed upon in conversation. Organize a written summary, ideally one or two pages, which highlights strategic assumptions about the district, your overarching message, strategies to be used, the core methods, and information about the opposing candidate(s).
With this information, put together a series of notes and bullet points. As you research and develop the rest of the campaign plan, the summary will be adjusted.
You can organize based upon the following sections:
- Goals - Vote Goal, Money Goal, Main Priorities, and Statistics
- Message - Core Values & Messaging
- Strategies - Key assumptions & Approach to Winning Votes
- Methods - The Activated Strategies: Tools, Programs, & Vendors
- Opposition - Expected Strategies & Tactics from the Opponent
Questions you will need to answer include:
- What is the vote goal for your district?
- How much money will you need to raise?
- What are the core values of your campaign?
- What are the biggest concerns for the district?
- What are the main strategies you will utilize to reach voters?
- What are the main tools and expenditures you will use to reach voters?
- How does the opponent plan to win the election?
